Genital Wart Treatment

Genital warts are infectious lesions caused by human papilloma viruses (HPV). Although there are more than 200 types of HPV, only some of them cause infection in the anogenital area. Genital warts in the anogenital area are called "condyloma" and can be transmitted through sexual intercourse.

It has been reported that more than 80% of many sexually active people have one or more anogenital HPV infections. Warts may not be seen in every infected individual, but they are contagious. The probability of HPV recurring is approximately 30%.

An important feature of genital warts is that some types are associated with cervical cancer. If HPV infection continues for a long time, high-risk types can cause cervical cancer. Because of HPV's cancer-causing potential, sexually active women should have regular smear tests.

After the planning is completed, if orthodontic treatment is not necessary, the level disorders in the gums are corrected first. In case of tooth deficiencies, implant procedures and other surgical applications are performed. After the completion of the healing process of surgical interventions, teeth whitening procedures are applied if needed. After this stage, visual and stylistic defects in the teeth are corrected by using aesthetic composite fillings. In cases where this method is insufficient, porcelain, laminated or zirconium veneers are used. During all these gum and dental applications, the targeted smile design is finalised by considering the lip shape and contour.

What are the Causes of Genital Wart?

The main cause of genital warts is infection with the virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus is usually passed from person to person through sexual contact. However, HPV infection alone is not sufficient for the formation of genital warts. Often an interaction of additional factors is required. Some of the causes of genital warts are:

HPV Virus Transmission: The most common cause of genital warts is the transmission of the HPV virus from person to person through sexual contact.

Sexual Contact with Someone with Genital Warts: HPV is usually transmitted during sexual intercourse. Therefore, the risk of HPV transmission is higher among sexually active people.

Weak Immune System: A weak immune system may have difficulty controlling HPV infection and may lead to genital warts.

Smoking: Smoking can contribute to the progression of HPV infection and the formation of genital warts.

Different HPV Types: Having different HPV types between partners may increase the risk of transmitting the virus.

Beginning of Sexual Activity: Starting sexual activity at an early age may increase the risk of HPV infection and genital warts.

Risk factors associated with the causes of genital warts may vary from person to person. Having regular medical check-ups, getting the HPV vaccine and following the rules of safe sexual intercourse are very important in protecting against infection.

How is Genital Wart Treatment?

Genital wart treatment includes various methods to relieve the symptoms of warts and eliminate warts. The treatment method may vary depending on factors such as the size, number and location of the warts and the patient's general health condition. Commonly used methods in the treatment of genital warts are:

Topical Creams or Solutions: Topical medications such as podophyloxide or imivimod are used by applying them directly to the warts. Treatment can last several weeks and must be applied regularly.

Cryotherapy (Freezing Treatment): Warts are frozen using liquid nitrogen or a similar cooling agent. Treatment may require several sessions.

Electrocauterization: Warts are burned using electric current. The treatment is performed under local anesthesia and slight discomfort may be felt.

Laser Treatment: Warts are destroyed with high-intensity light energy. This method may be effective for larger warts.

Surgical Excision: Surgical removal of large or resistant warts. The treatment is performed under local anesthesia.

Immunotherapy: Antigen therapy or medications such as interferon can be used to strengthen the immune system.

In addition to treatment, for teens and adults who are not sexually active, the HPV vaccine can prevent genital warts. However, the HPV vaccine is not used to treat genital warts. It is important to consult a healthcare professional to determine which treatment option is most appropriate.
